Eating Like Our Ancestors Project
The Eating Like Our Ancestors project helps our community reconnect with traditional Lakota foods and food systems while ensuring access for future generations. We interviewed 12 Cheyenne River elders who shared stories, recipes, and cultural teachings. With support from youth, community members, and partners, we created the Uncí Kitchen Toolkit to preserve Indigenous foodways and spark conversation. The toolkit, featuring elder wisdom and youth illustrations, will be available to all Cheyenne River residents in print and digital formats.

Unči Kitchen Toolkit
Imagine yourself sitting at your Unči kitchen table, reading this book together. Our initial aim, was for this toolkit to be embraced as a companion for enhancing the understanding, and application of traditional foods among younger generations. However, it evolved into something far greater.
This book is dedicated to those who were raised with the knowledge of traditional
foods, as well as those who weren’t fortunate enough to inherit these passed-down teachings. It’s for both the traditional and non-traditional tiošpaye (extended family), and for anyone eager to delve into the rich world of traditional Lakota foods.

Support Cultural Sustainability!
Due to limited funding, we have a limited number of printed toolkits available. This resource helps preserve our history and present-day culture. In alignment with Lakota values, it is shared freely—not sold.
Donations are welcome to help us print and distribute more toolkits to our community.
