Annie Chasing Hawk is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and was born and raised in Red Scaffold, SD. Annie’s Lakota name is Ho Waste’ Win, Good Voice Woman. Ho Waste’ Win comes from the Mnicoujou and Itazipco bands of the Lakota. Annie grew up drawing and sketching in secret, having been told that art was not a career path. She is now a painter, working primarily with acrylic paint on canvas. She is best known for her horses. Naturally, being raised on a horse ranch, Annie loves horses and animals - she draws a great deal of inspiration from them. Annie also grew up hearing the stories of how important the shunka wakan were to our ancestors and hopes to pass down that piece of our history in her art.
As a Lakota, Annie was taught as a child the sacred values of the medicine wheel: Respect, Courage, Wisdom, and Generosity. She has four God-children whom she is extremely proud of and strives to help them understand our culture and values. Annie also strives to embrace the energy from her Lakota culture and background and uses it in her everyday life. As an artist Annie works to reflect these values with each piece, each piece a reflection of herself. The idea is to promote a positive self-image of our people, our lands, and our lives. Through the stories, art, and teaching, Annie believes we can make a difference. She is currently learning the art of watercolor - expanding her expertise and learning new mediums and ways to express herself.
Annie is a Running Strong for American Indian Youth Dreamstarter™, dreaming into reality a children’s book project involving our elder and oral storytelling on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Annie’s dream is also to help young artists make a living with their art through an artist collective. Annie Chasing Hawk devoted a great deal of her artistic career to growing with the Keya Foundation, Inc. She has also created numerous logos that have been featured by local programs and has had pieces featured in various publications.
